Freedom through Restriction
This shibari suspension performance was the central element of my MA graduate show installation, ‘Fearless Curiosity and Empathy,’ it plays into my running question, Where does the line between support and restriction lie?
Using my body in a highly physical and visceral performance as a way to visualise the paradoxes involved in comfort versus restriction, safety versus suffocation and the intimacy involved in pain & pleasure. While also bringing together the different elements of my installation and challenging some of the perceptions of what a wheelchair user is capable of.
Communicating ‘Fine’
Communicating ‘Fine’ is a video-based work created during the second lockdown last year. It is part of an ongoing endeavour into how to communicate what it's like living with chronic pain, disability, severe depression and anxiety, particularly during lockdowns and isolation.
The Shibari and special effects make up, contribute to illustrating some of the paradox and contradiction involved in comfort versus restriction, safety versus suffocation and the intimacy involved in pain and pleasure.
